Mmm, doughnuts. A perfect addition to any day, no? And what better place to go than Duck Donuts? I swear, those guys over at Duck Donuts are like the Five Guys of the doughnut world. Not only can you choose your toppings, drizzle, and base, but that stuff gets everywhere. Grab your kids and hide your wife: no article of clothing is safe.
As you can see in the picture above, there is a stark difference between the ones my friend got and the cool-looking ones I got. Hers are all boring and plain, with just base and drizzle, whereas mine have these magical things called sprinkles. And bacon, can’t forget the bacon. But on her all white one (vanilla base icing and coconut topping), one of my chocolate sprinkles made its way onto it, so it looks like a mouse took a shit on her doughnut. Serves her right for not getting sprinkles.
That being said, these doughnuts are good. Like, really good. The outside is crispy, but just enough to feel the crunch as you bite down. Underneath the perfectly crisped surface, the dough inside is soft and chewy.
The pink, the strawberry base, icing is splendid. It has a strong fruity taste that doesn’t get lost in the artificial sugary sweetness that most strawberry icing has. You can practically smell the way it tastes. It’s that kind of fruity taste.
The bacon, on the other hand, could stand to be a bit better. It’s a tad too sweet for my taste, especially with the maple base icing to boot. It’s like just eating a tablespoon of pure chunky sugar with maple syrup on top; there’s not much bacon flavor.
These doughnuts aren’t weak like Krispy Kreme doughnuts. This dough, while soft and chewy, holds its shape well. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are incredibly squishy and lose their shape easily, but these are firmer. It’s not so firm as to make it hard to chew, though, just firm enough to hold its doughnut-y shape. Not saying that Krispy Kreme doughnuts are bad, they just don’t keep their shape well.
Those are the most noteworthy things about these doughnuts. The strawberry base is fruity and the bacon is not bacony. And they keep their shape when you squeeze them. Overall, they are wonderful doughnuts. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who likes doughnuts.
